How can I know if I have hearing loss?

How to identify hearing loss.

As an audiologist, one of the most common questions I receive is how to know if one has hearing loss. Some of the obvious signs are: difficulty understanding speech, difficulty hearing background noise, having to turn up the TV volume, or having a loved one who speaks loudly.

Other subtle signs include tinnitus (ringing or roaring in the ears) and attribute to hearing loss. The degree of hearing loss will determine the severity of these symptoms. If you experience one or more of these signs, it is recommended to seek a professional exam to determine the extent of your hearing loss.
